FREEDOM OF SPEECH POLITICS & BEDFELLOWS The Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka Kansas is becoming infamous for their protests at military funerals, citing their belief that the IRAQ war deaths are the result of America's growing tolerance of the homosexual lifestyle. They have been so active that Congress passed and President Bush signed a law banning protests at military funerals, specifically targeted at this church group. Wielding this new law, Albert Snyder of York, PA has now filed a lawsuit against the protesters seeking unspecified damages. Although this writer disagrees with the protesters cause, I support the Westboro church having a fundamental right under the US Constitution to dissent at any time, anywhere...even at a funeral. American citizens often forget that the United States Constitution and the Declaration of Independence were signals of tolerance for minority beliefs, for all beliefs, no matter how offensive to someone else. The sooner this law is struck down as unconstitutional...the better.
