Not since
the days of the Washington Post discovering Richard Nixon’s
Watergate shenanigans have I heard a President of the United
States grumble so loudly about journalism…and we all know
the rest of that story.
This
imperialistic President and members of his administration
seem to think the United States is something they own,
theirs with which to tinker, a diversion of the idle rich,
an amusement to entertain them regardless of consequence.
Sitting
at their game table, they make decisions as if playing
Checkers. However, in this game, each subsequent player’s
turn is not a move across a game board but historic moments
in American history: the Patriot Act, spending billions of
dollars, invading countries, monitoring bank transactions,
performing domestic and international surveillance and on
and on.
And yet,
after all this time, none of the players in this game has
finished the game or captured the prize….Osama bin laden.
They
squeal when we question them. We hear their cries of how
they are protecting us in the war on terror! They tell us
that the deaths of over 2,500 United States soldiers are
necessary…as is the 100,000 civilians who have died.
Could this
be true? Or are their words simply a way to justify their
need to rulers?
Is the
world really a safer place now that we can scan shoes for
explosives but cannot trust our government to protect our
constitutional rights?
I say
“Thank You” New York Times for the daily doses of reality.
Thank you for protecting all of us against those that
believe they must manipulate the very foundations of our
nation to do their bidding.
